In the Confessions, St Augustine tells us that while sitting in a garden, deep in struggle over accepting the Christian faith, he heard a child’s voice somewhere singing, “tolle, lege, tolle lege”, “take up, read, take up, read”. He immediately picked up the Scripture, began reading, and his life was transformed forever. Tolle Et Lege is a ministry of Alighieri Press founded on the sure belief that we, too, will find our lives transformed as we take up and read God’s Word. Our hope is to foster that transformation by encouraging the regular, frequent, prayerful reading of the Scripture primarily through posting each Sunday’s lectionary readings with a brief meditation in the week prior to their being read and proclaimed in church.

In Verbum Domini, Benedict XVI wrote, “it is important to read and experience Sacred Scripture in communion with the Church… for that reason the privileged place for the prayerful reading of Sacred Scripture is the liturgy”. It is this reality we want to honor. If, as St. Jerome said, “ignorance of the Scripture is ignorance of Christ”, we can think of no better way to learn the Scripture and so draw closer to Christ than the prayerful reading and reflection on the lectionary texts in preparation for worship followed by a fresh hearing and their proclamation each Sunday. We hope you will join us in this endeavor; we are absolutely confident that it can make a great difference in your life. Whenever we take up the challenge –Tolle Et Lege, Take up and Read – life can be transformed.
