Only when the two are lived together, Love and Truth, are we able to live lives truly pleasing to God. Love alone is formless and may even be harmful, though truly unintentionally. Truth alone is often harsh and callous and, without love, is not truth at all. The two must be joined, truth guiding love and love motivating truth.

A Beacon of Hope – First Reading in Preparation for the First Sunday in Advent, Year C

Nevertheless, by faith Jeremiah proclaimed the promise God gave him for the people and so, in the darkest of times, gave hope and courage to all who would believe…As such, Jeremiah serves as a prime example of all those who have gone before us and have lived by faith in a promised future they would not live to see, but which they would help usher in by their faithfulness and courage: Abraham, Sarah, Moses, every prophet, every martyr who has ever lived, right down to our own day. I think of the sister of Corrie ten Boom who, on her deathbed in Auschwitz, told her sister to carry this message for her to the world:

“We have been to the deepest pit and we proclaim, there is no pit so deep that God is not deeper still.”

I think, too, of Dr. King in Memphis speaking just the day before his assassination…

Brimming with Expectation – Gospel in Preparation for the First Sunday of Advent

Advent…reminds us that the Last Day, the Day of Judgment is something to be celebrated; for to those who have been vigilant it is not Judgment but Salvation. Our Catechism teaches us that Advent is the time during which “the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming” (CCC 524). We have been sustained by Christ, we have been given great faith, innumerable graces and blessed companions so that we might experience His coming with joy! We don’t practice vigilance in prayer only because “the Bible tells us so”. We are vigilant in prayer because we are brimming with expectation.

The Assurance of Hope – Second Reading in Preparation for the First Sunday of Advent

This is a vastly important message for all who would follow Christ and hope to reach heaven. It is knowing that we can’t lose that gives us the courage to try, to strive, and to persevere even in the face of strong opposition. It is the knowledge that God is for us that emboldens us to face every enemy. Perhaps this is the very message you need to hear today: That God is for you! That He will finish what He has started in you! That He will sustain you to the end! And that nothing can separate you from His love!
