The Good Shepherd – Gospel for the Fourth Sunday of Easter

It is precisely this relationship of intimacy and trust that would draw them to him when he called—even if they could not see his face—and cause them to not turn back when the road ahead seemed difficult and interminable or run away when faced with overwhelming danger. And it is this relationship that the Lord longs to develop with each one of us—so that we, too, may learn to come when he calls, follow where he leads and not stray in the face of hardship or suffering, but trust in both his protection and provision.

Both of these promises are for everyone, for everyone is invited to put their trust in him. However, the promises are able to be fulfilled only in those who love him: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father and He will…” give you another Counselor, to be with you forever. Note that the love required is not mere affection or sentimentality, but obedience. William Barclay wrote correctly, “”To John there is only one test of love and that is obedience. It was by obedience that Jesus showed his love for God ; and it is by our obedience that we must show our love for Jesus”.”

His Word is the communication of his very Life to his creation, and supremely to Man, who is created in His image and likeness. The natural outworking of this is not obvious to many of us, and for most extraordinarily difficult to believe (myself included): that just as the Life of God can never fail, so also His Word—which is the revelation and communication of His Life and Being—can never fail.”

Fulfillment is at the heart of the Easter message. Our God keeps his promises; every one of them. . God has promised salvation and what he has promised he has done! In fact, in Christ God has answered and is answering every promise He has ever made. The apostle Paul captures this beautifully in one great exclamations: ““For in him all the promises of God find their Yes! with him! That is why we utter the Amen through him to the glory of God.” ”(II Cor 1:20)
