It is clear from the readings that the disciples’ experience of the Ascension left them, as an old saying goes,”with their eyes on heaven and both feet planted firmly on the ground.” It may be a paradox but, as Father Barron says: “The more you are straining toward heaven…the more you are dedicated to this world and its concerns , its struggles and its sorrows.” That is so because the one who is leading us to heaven is the one who is also focusing our attention on earth.

A Power Unsurpassed – Second Reading in Preparation for the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord

“At the center of Paul’s prayer for the church …is his longing that they will come to realize that this same power, the power seen at Easter and now vested in Jesus, is available to them for their daily use…Far too many Christians today and, one suspects, in Paul’s day are quite unaware that this power is there and available.’(NT Wright)

Of course, that power, that presence, is not available to do just anything and everything we want or wish, but it is there to accomplish everything, absolutely everything, God wants and wishes for us, primarily the conquering of sin and the accomplishing of all we are called to do and be.

Waiting on the Lord – First Meditation in Preparation for Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord

In the words of St. Paul, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” This is the freedom we see evidenced in the lives of the disciples as they received power from the Holy Spirit catapulting them into a dramatic worldwide ministry, facing the very people they had most feared just days prior. And it is the freedom that is available to each one of us if we will but surrender to God and trust in the plans He has for our life.

For they are good, as He is good. He who is Love cannot but act in love and order everything in our lives according to that same love. And as the prophet Isaiah reminds us, He works for those who wait for Him (64:4)
